DAMASCUS, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accepted Sunday the credentials of new Chinese Ambassador to Syria Zhang Xun, a diplomat at the Chinese embassy told Xinhua.

At the protocol ceremony held in Damascus, Zhang expressed " high appreciation" to the achievements made by the two countries in different areas since the establishment of diplomatic ties 55 years ago.

Zhang, who succeeded Li Huaxin, meanwhile voiced gratefulness to the Syrian government for adhering to the one China policy, and expressed wishes for the Syrian people to restore their occupied territories through peaceful negotiations based on international legitimate resolutions, in reference to the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel during the 1967 Mideast war.

Zhang pledged his utmost effort to push forward the friendly relations and cooperation between China and Syria.

For his part, Syrian President al-Assad welcomed the ambassador to perform his mission in Damascus, and hailed China's economic development in recent years as well as its role in international affairs.

Al-Assad reiterated his country's keenness of promoting ties with China and raising the level of cooperation between the two countries to a new level.
